Custom Trophies For National Sports Leagues

Although it’s probably not a topic you sit around and think about with friends and family, custom trophies have a colorful story to them.  Here at KJR Awards, we love our trophies and all that comes with them.  That is why we decided to share with you a bit of fun trivia regarding famous sports trophies around the globe.

NHL – Stanley Cupcustom trophies

First awarded in 1893 to Montreal Hockey Club, the Stanly Cup was a donation from Sir Fredrick Arthur Stanley in 1892.  However, it was not until 1926 that the Stanley Cup became the sole trophy for professional hockey.  With small changes beginning to take place, in 1947 the NHL was granted exclusive control of the Cup.  Since, several engravings of player names and winning teams have been added to the 34.5 pound Cup; giving teams the ultimate end of season goal.

NFL – Vince Lombardi Trophy

Similarly, the NFL has adopted a custom trophy for the season champion.   What is now known as the Vince Lombardi Trophy began as a doodle on a cocktail napkin in 1966.  Tiffany & Co.’s vice president, Oscar Riedner is credited with the doodle that inspired the company to produce the original trophy.  First awarded to the Green Bay Packers in 1967, the Lombardi Trophy weighs 7 pounds and is made from sterling silver.

One of the most noticeable facelifts the trophy has undergone made recent news.  During a recent visit to Boston’s Fenway Park, Rob Gronkowski bunted a warmup pitch with the trophy, leaving the impression of a baseball in the cup.

NBA – Larry O’Brien Trophy

Created in 1978, the Larry O’Brien trophy was once named after Walter A. Brown, the original owner of the Boston Celtics.  Standing two feet tall and weighing 15.5 pounds, the Larry O’Brien Trophy is also manufactured by Tiffany & Co.. Further, much like the previous two mentioned, the winning team and players names are engraved into the trophy.

MLB – Commissioner’s Trophy

trophies MAPresented each year to the winner of the World Series, the Commissioner’s Trophy has been awarded since 1967 when the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Boston Red Sox.  Unlike the Lombardi and Stanley Cup, each year a new Commissioner’s Trophy is created for the winning team.  However, 2018 saw similarities between the Commissioner’s Trophy and the Lombardi Trophy.  During the World Series celebration parade in Boston, a spectator damaged the trophy by throwing a beer can.
